What is black and white photography

A black and white photograph is an image where all the color has been removed. It consists of shades of gray tone that generally go from dark (black) to light (white). A monochrome image also has the colour removed.

I love black and white photography. There is an indescribable magic to taking black and white photos that is impossible to explain. It is the composition with highlights and shadows in the details. I asked myself, Why an I eliminating color from a particular photo? What makes it so important to shoot or change the photo into black and white that way?

Black and white photos makes me feel like they are “timeless” and are more artistic then others with only some making the photo stand out. It has a surreal and almost dreamlike quality too. These are the pictures I saw that emotions and feelings into each one of my collection.

This particular time of the year I go out to the Southern Oregon Coast usually Brookings, Harris Beach State Park to gather sea kelp for basketry making. It was August and the weather was great and I got there the high tide was building up. I never found any sun-dried sea kelp on the shoreline so I sat on the shoreline and listened to the ocean roar with a each beat of the pondering waves crashing against the rocks and shoreline. I could feel and hear the exact time each huge tide came in and that’s when I sat there capturing each section frame by frame. I did move around for different angles until I got caught in a rock formation with the tides higher then I thought almost getting me trapped. WOW! It was a great few shots but the tide current was very strong.

Here’s a few of the ones in my collection that were the most powerful and emotional feeling of the oceans force of nature. Amazing isn’t it!
