Q. What is the difference between lustre paper and fine art paper?

A. The biggest difference between lustre and fine art paper is that lustre has a semi-matte finish with a very slight texture, whereas fine art paper has a totally matte, smooth finish. The print process is different for both paper types, as well - lustre prints are created using a traditional, chromogenic print process, whereas fine art prints are created using a giclee, inkjet print process. Fine art prints are more expensive to create both because of the print process and the paper is more expensive than lustre. Both papers are archival (will not fade) for 100 years when displayed under glass in normal lighting conditions.

Lustre paper is my standard go-to paper choice, and works perfectly for most everything. If you're hanging a print in a place where glare isn't an issue, lustre paper will work perfectly for you. I consider fine art paper to be more of a "luxury paper", it's nice to have, but not really necessary! Some people prefer the matte, fine art look. Generally speaking, I prefer lustre paper for my regular colorful landscape images because the semi-gloss finish accentuates color and contrast, and fine art paper for my abstract images, since the latter tends to accentuate the "painterly" quality of the abstracts. Can an image be printed at a custom size?

Yes, most images can be printed at custom sizes. This usually requires the image to be cropped from its original ratio. Extensive cropping will limit how large the image can be printed. Please contact me if you're interested in a custom size.

Most photos print beautifully on both fine art paper and lustre paper, so you really can't go wrong no matter which paper you choose.
Having said that, colorful or scenic photos print best on lustre paper, as the semi-gloss finish enhances the saturation and contrast in these images.
Abstract photographs print well on both paper types, but fine art paper enhances the painterly, impressionist quality of these photos.
For black and white photos, I find that fine art paper works best as it brings out the subtle gradations of tones, and enhances the traditional artistic quality of black and white photography.
